The port city of Huasco is located at 28 ° 27 ‘ 59 ” South latitude and 71 ° 13’ 09″ W, distant 191 km south-west of Copiapó (capital of the region of Atacama ) , and 46 km west of Vallenar ( capital of the province of Huasco ) . This is the most important port in the region .

The origin of the word Huasco is not well defined . Historians agree that should come from the Quechua language , because only in the year 1529 this area ceases to belong to the Inca Empire, and because many of the Quechua words or syllables carry hua huas as huasca ( Quechua : ” whip ” ) that are not typical of other northern indigenous peoples.
Historians also argue that the area should bear this name in honour of the twelfth and penultimate Inca emperor , called Huascar ( Quechua : ” Golden Chain ” ) (* 1491 – † 1533 ) . And the back Mapuche influence did change the car ( Quechua : ” string”) co syllable by syllable ( Mapudungun : ” water ” or ” river”) .

In short , the word would Huasco conversion of the Mapuche -car Kuas Quechua ( Quechua : Kuas “gold” and Quechua car ” string”) . So it follows that the Mapuche knew , respected or assumed their people and be called to this land , and they deformed , converted or translated to suit the word , respecting the huas ( Quechua : ” gold”) and changing car by co ( mapudungun ” river”) , thus joining two languages ??that make up the word Huasco , and that therefore mean “River of gold “.
